Carolina Villegas Art Statement

ART STATEMENT

My work represents a continuous dialogue between the microcosm and the macrocosm. I deeply believe that the only way to have a glimpse into the secrets of the Universe is by contemplating nature. For me, the contrast between perspectives, like the tiniest details on flowers to the large structures in the cosmos, provide the means to touch and feel the vastness of the Universe, and at the same time find a deeper meaning of life and existence.

At its core, my practice stems from a profound desire to inhabit matter through our physical presence in the world—through art. I fall in love with a material, an object, or a form, as one might fall in love with a person. This is a visceral experience that becomes a relationship unfolding over time and subtly dictating the rhythm of my daily life. It rules how I interact with the matter that surrounds me, making me sensible and open to the this new presence—this Being.

By weaving concepts and forms that coincide in the micro and macrocosm, I build fictional landscapes and imaginary spaces that explore multiple ways of inhabiting and experiencing matter. Such exploration has a symbolic resonance with my everyday experience.

My research draws from disciplines such as literature, philosophy, anthropology, biology, geology, and astronomy. All these interwove with my dreams, my intuitions, and the experience of  life itself. I believe that artistic knowledge arises from our inherent and inseparable bond with life, its symbolic events, our journeys, the studio, experimentation, and sensation. It is through this evolving process that the meaning of my work emerges.

In my practice I rely on Installation (expanded painting), Oil  and Aquarelle painting, Engraving, large and small scale Drawing, Sculpture, Photography, Performance, and Dance.
